About Our Community

The Gailen and Cathy Reevers Center for Community Empowerment  advances equity, builds power and strengthens our community by helping residents disable obstacles that imperil health and wellness, while providing opportunities that promote socio-economic wellbeing, academic success, civic engagement and cultural awareness.

We dismantle anti-black systemic racism by helping our community realize their own power to be whole, healthy, smart and productive in their own skin. GCRC envisions a community that fosters a caring and nurturing  environment where young people have access and opportunities to maximize their full potential; where families are unified and strengthened through sustainable resources; where physical health and well being is prioritized and where community pride is a common and shared experience.

Vision

Vision: We strive to enrich the lives of youth, adults, families, and seniors by envisioning South Los Angeles as a safe, healthy, thriving, culturally empowered, and inclusive community. We assist individuals, families and the surrounding community in dismantling obstacles that imperil holistic health and wellness. We believe this is achieved by providing opportunities that promote physical and mental health and safety, academic success, and cultural awareness.  Healthy minds, bodies, and souls build from where we live, learn, work and play.

A RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Listen as one of our participants changed Her mind about the Vaccine!

In March of 2020, life in America and the world changed dramatically.  We were faced with a pandemic that was taking the lives of people all over the world.  The country had to shut down.  People lost their jobs.  Some became homeless and our children could not attend school.  The African American and Latinx communities were severely impacted by this deadly virus.

During this time, the scientists were working to develop a vaccine that would keep people from dying because of COVID-19.  There was a great deal of erroneous information coming from politicians and the media.  People were confused and did not know what to believe.  As a result, many individuals were very skeptical about taking the vaccine.

GCRC partnered with the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and UCLA Westwood to offer educational lectures by physicians who were involved in the clinical trials for the development of the COVID-19 vaccines.  People learned these vaccines worked,  why it appeared that they were developed too quickly and why the vaccines that were being developed were safe.

As a result of these lectures, one participant who was adamant about not getting the vaccine, was 50% convinced.  She went home and continued reading and listening to credible scientists.  When the vaccine became available, she was 100% convinced that she should get the vaccine. Listen to Virgie’s journey.

We partnered with Providence Health Care to distribute 10,000 COVID-19 prevention kits to the African American and Latino communities.  With our partnership with Providence, we were one of the first non-profits to sponsor a vaccine clinic at Lincoln Memorial United Church of Christ where we offered first and second COVID-19 vaccines to 250 individuals, including a 102-year-old African American man.
