The Bottom Line on Exercise

Exercise and physical activity are great ways to feel better, boost your health and have fun. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends:

  • At least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread this exercise throughout the week. Examples include running, walking or swimming. Even small amounts of physical activity are helpful, and accumulated activity throughout the day adds up to provide health benefits.
  • Strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week. Examples include lifting free weights, using weight machines or doing body-weight training.

Spread your activities throughout the week. If you want to lose weight, meet specific fitness goals or get even more benefits, you may need to ramp up your moderate aerobic activity to 300 minutes or more a week.

Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any concerns about your fitness, haven’t exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis.

Virgie Mosley

Virgie Mosley - In Her Own Words

Listen to Virgie Mosley'S COVID-19 TESTIMONY

Listen as one of our participants changed Her mind about the Vaccine!

In March of 2020, life in America and the world changed dramatically.  We were faced with a pandemic that was taking the lives of people all over the world.  The country had to shut down.  People lost their jobs.  Some became homeless and our children could not attend school.  The African American and Latinx communities were severely impacted by this deadly virus.

During this time, the scientists were working to develop a vaccine that would keep people from dying because of COVID-19.  There was a great deal of erroneous information coming from politicians and the media.  People were confused and did not know what to believe.  As a result, many individuals were very skeptical about taking the vaccine.

GCRC partnered with the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and UCLA Westwood to offer educational lectures by physicians who were involved in the clinical trials for the development of the COVID-19 vaccines.  People learned these vaccines worked,  why it appeared that they were developed too quickly and why the vaccines that were being developed were safe.

As a result of these lectures, one participant who was adamant about not getting the vaccine, was 50% convinced.  She went home and continued reading and listening to credible scientists.  When the vaccine became available, she was 100% convinced that she should get the vaccine. Listen to Virgie’s journey.

We partnered with Providence Health Care to distribute 10,000 COVID-19 prevention kits to the African American and Latino communities.  With our partnership with Providence, we were one of the first non-profits to sponsor a vaccine clinic at Lincoln Memorial United Church of Christ where we offered first and second COVID-19 vaccines to 250 individuals, including a 102-year-old African American man.

Anthony Fauci, M.D., NIAID Director, Says Current Vaccines Will Stand Up To The Delta Variant

July 8, 2021

Coronavirus cases and deaths in the U.S. are down dramatically from last winter’s peaks, but the road ahead could still be a long one, with the rapid spread of the delta variant — now the dominant strain of the virus in the U.S. — and mounting questions over how effective current vaccines are against it.

Addressing those concerns in an interview Thursday with NPR’s All Things Considered, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said studies continue to show that vaccines are not only effective against the virus, they’re also highly effective at preventing serious disease or hospitalization.

Vacination

COVID -19 Vaccines are highly effective.

No matter what study you look at, the protection against severe disease leading to hospitalization is always well within the 90%, regardless of the study, regardless of the country,” Fauci said.
